Santa Cruz Shelter in Place 2020: Day 13

Day 13 of the Stay at Home Ordinance marked the second weekend of social distancing. And it happened to be one of Ellia’s good friend’s birthday. In order to celebrate Reese’s birthday, and still comply with the social distancing regulations, we threw her a giant birthday parade! All of our friends showed up in their cars with balloons and signs and we all honked our horns and sang “Happy Birthday”. It was pretty incredible and heart warming. Of course, we’d rather celebrate her life a different way, but we had to make due! And I think the birthday girl, and her mom, really appreciated it!

Oh, and Ellia picked out my outfit, did my hair & makeup, and made the mom’s mimosas for the occasion! It was Ellia’s first time opening up a bottle of champagne, all by herself, and I totally messed up with the filming of it. I thought that I had pushed record, when I really hadn’t. 

Later on, I fixed Ellia’s necklace, which she broke during some basketball (after they finally got the hoop up!). Ellia cleaned out our garden boxes. She is getting our garden beds ready so that when the seeds that my mom has for us arrive in the mail, we can plant a garden. So that’ll be fun! Originally I was gonna pay Ellia five dollars per garden box, but she tried to renegotiate up to 20. I did agree to give her a total of 15 if she finished sweeping the area because she did a fantastic job, but, negotiations generally should happen before the work. So I have to teach her that because it would have been really easy for me to say no.

It’s like this cutest mini stack of pancakes you’ve ever seen! And I heard like, fuzzing and buzzing in the kitchen. What, how did you do all that? What did you ma- Oh my God, they’re so good! Cinnamon toast pancakes. They’re so good, try it! Ellia and I are getting ready for a birthday surprise for her friend, so I’m gonna let her pick out my outfit, and I’m gonna let her do my makeup. My hair is done. Let’s do this. We’re gonna do social distancing birthday parade for our dear lovely friend. You guys, this is a tragedy! I, Ellia had just made the most beautiful mimosa. She opened the champagne all by herself and I thought I hit record, but I didn’t! Jason! No, no! Well, Ellia is making our Mimosas so we can go gather for our friend’s birthday party in the street, and wish her a distant, social distancing birthday party. Cheers! Thank you. Wha’d y’all think? Ellia did my makeup, she did my hair, and she got me dressed. We are going over to our friend’s street party, a social distancing birthday parade in the street to yell and share with her the celebration of her life, which we’re really excited about. We wish we could be in a more normal birthday party setting for her, but, we are making due. So street parade it is! We love you Reese, Happy Birthday! Hi girls! She’s like, can I touch it? So yesterday Ellia broke her chain when we were playing basketball and she was really bummed about it, but I was able to just fix it for her, so I’m gonna go give it to her right now because she is being a little industrious bunny and cleaning outside, getting our garden beds ready so that when the seeds that my mom has for us arrive in the mail, we can plant a garden. So that’ll be fun! Happy Saturday! Wow, Ellia! Wow! Oh, this looks so good! Isn’t that amazing, all of those are broccoli, right? Mmm hmmm. Oh, is that a carrot? I think that was a carrot you just pulled. No, they’re not carrots. They’re not? ‘Cause there was other ones and they had like, flowers on top. Yeah, they look like carrots. It it does look good now. Look at what I did Yay! How did you do that? ‘Cause I’m a master fixer. That was a baby broccoli but it was already out. That looks really good. Yeah, but they aren’t ready with that over there yet. I just been working on this side for a little bit ’cause there’s all these like, tiny ones. And I think that I find that like a I find that veggies that come right out of the garden are sweeter than store bought veggies. Do you think that’s true? You don’t know? ‘Kay.
